I suppose I'm sort of looking forward to the overtime for it but... annoyed as HELL that I'm here.

See, there's this one job - prepress - which is absolutely critical to getting the paper out. And being a small paper, only one person at a time is on the job, and it kinda gets combined with tech services sometimes. But if we don't have someone trained to do prepress in the office, Bad Things Happen. Like we don't print a daily paper.

There are three people at the paper trained to do prepress, two of whom usually do it, and me, who used to do it and still pays enough attention I can get the paper out. (Back when I was on prepress, there were two of us, period. I once worked for a month without a day off when the senior prepress guy took a couple weekends off. But that's fair, because he'd worked two months solid before they got me hired and trained.)

Especially since they've become very cautious about overtime in the last year or so, it's not unusual for me to be asked to fill in for someone being sick or on vacation, since my projects, while important, can usually be bumped back a day without crisis.

Prepress is Tom, who's fulltime prepress, and Donald, who's part-time prepress, part-time tech services. I'm now full time tech services.

Friday, when Tom was on prepress and Donald was on tech services, Donald called in about 5 minutes before his shift to tell the tech services manager that he'd broken his glasses and wouldn't be in.

No one could get ahold of him before Saturday, when Tom was supposed to be off (he usually works prepress on Saturdays, and Donald does tech services, but Tom worked extra hours last Monday covering for Donald being on vacation, so they had Donald scheduled for prepress to avoid the dread overtime). The production manager (who's in charge of prepress; the half and half position is split across two departments) told Tom to come in, and he'd pay for at least four hours if Donald -did- show up.

Donald didn't show up, so Tom did prepress. And Donald, who was supposed to be tech services on Sunday, didn't show up. So today is Monday, and they don't really want to pay Tom overtime at the end of the week, plus the poor guy still deserves his days off, so I agreed to come in if Donald didn't show up. Guess what? Here I am! As far as we can tell, Donald hasn't responded to an email or answered his own phone (though Tom did reach him at his brother's house on Saturday, once), nor attempted to contact anyone here at the paper since Friday.

...yes, very professional
