Can't help in general, but obligatory plugging of TracFone goes here!
(Which is to say, I have no idea about their data transfer/messaging/web capabilities; Mom uses the cheapest phone they offer and I use the next cheapest. But even their cheapest phone isn't bad; slightly iffy voice quality, but that's about all. So if you wind up, say, needing a phone ASAP but not being able to find the style you really want, a cheap TracFone and basic minutes plan is worth it. [grins])
