It's probably an Opera specific problem.
I start to suspect LJ hates Opera and deliberately breaks things for them. A feature will work fine in Opera and then abruptly stop. And they'll blame it on some obscure bug in Opera which can be easily worked around.
It's probably some of that open-source fans begrudge Opera being a better browser than Firefox thing. (This, of course, is objective, and I'm not starting a browser war here.)
