No, no, that's what I mean. Everyone knows Old Realm is Chinese/Japanese kanji. But it'd be a pain to write up a primer on kanji, so High/Low Realm can't be kanji if they're doing a primer. The logical next step is hiragana/katakana, which splits the difference between kanji (pretty characters that stand for things!) and letters (we just need to build an alphabet, we don't need to build a dictionary) very well.
...now, granted, their decision to stick with the Japanese consonant-vowel or consonant-consonant-vowel syllables only is very stupid in light of the fact that next to no Realm names are constructed that way, and there's only so far you can handwave with "Well, it's really Pe-le-psu, with a silent u" before it just gets silly. But I don't think they necessarily just went OMG JAPANESE == COOL when picking it; they could've easily went "Okay, how do we avoid using kanji while still doing something interesting?" and decided it didn't matter if the existing names broke their new rules as the existing names are clearly the dub translations.
